Is the keyboard closed, and can’t you type anything? If you accidentally locked the keyboard and couldn’t remember how you did it, just follow this guide for troubleshooting and you should be able to unlock your Windows 10/8/7 device on the screen.

You need to find out whether any keys or the entire keyboard has physically broken before starting. You can use external USB / PS2 keyboards, you can plug it into another device. If the problem still remains, your keyboard can get physically damaged.

Otherwise, it should be a software problem and the steps below can be taken to resolve it.

Phase 1: Switching Filter Keys Off

If your keyboard is locked entirely, you might have accidentally switched on the Filter Keys function.

You can hear a tone when you hold down the right SHIFT key for 8 seconds and the “Toggle Keys” icon appears in the machine tray.

Just then, you will find the keyboard is locked and there’s nothing you can do.

To open the keyboard, hold down the right SHIFT key again for 8 seconds to turn off the Filter Keys, or disable the Control Panel’s Filter Keys.

Phase 2: Reinstall or upgrade Driver Keyboard

Due to a defective or obsolete driver, the keyboard can become locked.

You may need to reinstall or upgrade the keyboard driver to get your keyboard back to running.

Follow on with these steps:

Open System Manager, and extend the category of keyboards. Right-click the keyboard on your machine and either pick Update Driver or Uninstall System.

If you have selected the System Uninstall option, restart your computer.

The default keyboard driver is enabled automatically in Windows.
